The Nelson County Garden Club: The First Fifty Years, 1935-1985
The Nelson County Historical Society announces the publication of The Nelson County Garden Club: The First Fifty Years, 1935-1985 by Frederick Wilbur (paperback, 304 pages; color and black and white photographs). Derived from materials in the Society’s archives which were donated by the Club, the book is a thorough study of the organization and the important work of the women in many areas not usually associated with garden clubs.
It was an active civic group organizing and producing Nelson County Day, purchasing a Garden Center which eventually housed the first public library in the county, and providing essential support to Nature Camp, Vesuvius, VA. The club donated canned food to the public schools, beautified the county with plantings, supported the war effort throughout the 1940s: by sponsoring blood and bond drives, salvaging metals, paper and grease, and by sewing articles to aid in the recuperation of soldiers. The club held flower shows, of course, but also community luncheons, public speakers/ programs, and fund-raising bridge parties.
